Peter Anthony: The 1999 2000 Yuan gold 1 kg. Panda is another rare coin in the kilogram gold series. Unlike the older 12 oz. gold Pandas the kilo gold coins share the same basic imagery as the B.U. coins of their year. So this kilo gold Panda features a design of a young panda that has climbed onto a rocky perch. The young bear’s hold on the rock appears a bit tenuous. That seems fitting as 1999 was quite a poor year for numismatic sales in Asia. The number minted is 68 but there are fewer than that now. Note that 1999 is the last year that precedes the year 2000 and it is also the final year that a kilo gold Pandas is 2,000 Yuan.
With its large, soft surfaces this kilo gold Pandas tend to attract marks and a near-perfect PF69 coin is not commonplace at all. Only around one out of two coins grade PF-69 or better. Some of the flaws were likely already on the coins by the time they were shipped from the mint. Red spots are also to be expected, a problem that NCS has much experience in dealing with.
The 1999 2000 Yuan gold Panda is part of the “Gold 1 Kilo Panda, 1997-Date, Proof” NGC Registry set.
