Peter Anthony: The 2001 gold 10000 Yuan 1 kg. Panda is the fourth kilo gold is the series. Its denomination has jumped from the 3000 Yuan of the 2000 kilo gold Panda. Unlike the older 12 oz. gold Pandas the kilo golds share the same design as the smaller coins of their year. So this kilo gold Panda features almost the same impressive rimless design as its smaller siblings. It was released at a time when gold itself was probing its nadir and sales of new coins were tepid. The fate of many of these coins is unknown and the actual mintage may be lower than the reported one. With such large, soft surfaces these coins seem to attract marks and a near-perfect PF69 coin is not commonplace at all. Some of the flaws were likely already on the coins by the time they were shipped from the mint.
The 2001 10000 Yuan gold Panda is part of the “Gold 1 Kilo Panda, 1997-Date, Proof” NGC Registry set.
