Peter Anthony: The 2003 50 Yuan platinum Panda is the first coin in a brief two-year run of 1/20 oz. platinum Pandas. It shares the innovative design of a Panda standing in front of a sort of porthole to a bamboo forest. For a numismatist who wants a 1/20 oz. platinum Panda this coin is the best prospect. A decent part of the original mintage of 50,000 is still available which makes this the most affordable of all platinum Pandas. It’s quite cute, besides. Besides availability this coin grades well; hardly anything gets less than a PF69 and there are quite a few NGC-graded PF70s. This coin is not always well struck, though. Platinum is a much harder metal than silver or gold and details on a small coins like this are often a little mushy.
