Peter Anthony:The 1987 10 Yuan proof silver Panda is the first 1 oz. .999 fine silver Panda. It was issued along with a 5 oz. silver Panda to mark the fifth anniversary of the introduction of Panda coins. The appealing design features a young Panda clinging to a tree branch. This coin was originally sold alone and in a two-coin boxed set together with the 5 oz. silver Panda. Mintage was set at 31,000 but this coin is much scarcer than that number implies.
One of this coin’s great attributes is the excellent contrast between deep mirror fields and frosted devices. This may help its average grade as around half the coins submitted to NGC turn out to be PF-69s. The 1987 10 Yuan silver Panda is part of two NGC Registry sets: The “Silver 10Y Panda, 1983-Date, One-Per-Date” and the “Silver 10Y Panda, 1983-1999, Proof.”
