Peter Anthony: The 1989 100 Yuan 12 oz. silver Panda has an official mintage of 6,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous year. Despite the higher mintage the 1989 is the scarcer coin. In a sign of the slower market conditions in the late Eighties both the 5 oz. and 12 oz. gold Pandas were discontinued after 1988. MS-69 is the most common grade of the 1989 100 Yuan silver and the average grade is MS-68. These large, well preserved coins allow us to appreciate the outstanding design.
