Peter Anthony: The 1990 10 Yuan 1/10 oz. platinum Panda is the smallest of three fractional-sized Panda coins released in that year. It is the first 10 Yuan platinum Panda issued. Like the 1990 25 Yuan and 50 Yuan platinum coins the 10 Yuan has its own unique design. This distinguishes it from the later 1993-1997 10 Yuan platinum Pandas that all share their design with the B.U. gold coins of their years.
These Pandas were originally offered either as single coins or as part of sets. One set contained a platinum, silver and gold Panda. The best-known grouping is a three-coin set enclosed in a red Capitol Plastics holder. The total mintage is 4,500 but some of these were melted along with other Chinese platinum coins during the 1990’s so the total population is under 4,500. The Capitol holders protected these coins well; most grade PF-69 with few graded below that. The 1990 10 Yuan 1/10 oz. platinum Panda is part of the NGC Registry set, “Platinum 1/10 Ounce Panda, 1990-1997, Mint State and Proof.”
