Peter Anthony: The 1990 25 Yuan 1/4 oz. platinum Panda is the middle coin in a set of three fractional-sized Panda coins. It is the only ¼ oz. platinum Panda from the China Mint. Like the 1990 10 Yuan and 50 Yuan platinum coins the 10 Yuan has its own unique design that sets it apart from the 1990 B.U. gold coins.
These 1990 platinum Pandas were originally offered either as single coins or as part of a three-coin set enclosed in a red Capitol Plastics holder. The total mintage is 3,500 with 2,500 put into the three-coin sets. Outside of this set individual coins are rarely seen and it’s unclear how many were actually sold. In addition some were melted along with other Chinese platinum coins during the 1990’s so the total population is certainly less than 3,500. The Capitol holders protected these coins well; most grade PF-69 with few below that.
