Peter Anthony: The 1997 2000 Yuan gold 1 kg. Panda is the first kilo gold is the series. Unlike the older 12 oz. gold Pandas the kilo gold coins share the same basic imagery as the B.U. coins of their year. So this kilo gold Panda features a poetic design of a young panda perched on a tree branch. Note that unlike most of the later kilo gold Pandas this coin’s denomination is 2,000 Yuan.
The 1997 2000 Yuan gold Panda was released at a time of financial market turmoil and its mintage is just 58. With its large, soft surfaces this kilo gold Pandas tend to attract marks and a near-perfect PF69 coin is not commonplace at all. The average grade for these is PF-67. Some of the flaws were likely already on the coins by the time they were shipped from the mint. Red spots are also to be expected, a problem that NCS has much experience in dealing with.
The 1997 2000 Yuan gold Panda is part of the “Gold 1 Kilo Panda, 1997-Date, Proof” NGC Registry set.
