NGC Expert Comments:
DocKJ’s 19th century circulated type set of United States coinage shows that coins with just a touch of wear are as desirable as fully uncirculated coins in grades of MS-63 and even higher. We challenge collectors to carefully examine the AU-58 coins in this set and find the evidence of circulation. Among many particularly nice coins are DocKJ’s 1853 and 1859 seated half dollars (the 1859 with a particularly lustrous surface), 1899 Barber half, 1898 quarter eagle, and an 1855 half cent showing traces of red. DocKJ’s set contains every copper, nickel, and silver issue except for the early draped bust dime and half dime which are tough coins in circulated as well as uncirculated condition. The set includes some of the gold issues and is well on its way to 100% completion.
