NGC Expert Comments:
The phrase “Don’t mess with Texas” can also be applied to the top collector of its commemorative coins – MLM. MLM’s set of the 13 commemorative half dollars, minted from 1934 to 1938 in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, is top-ranked and close to double the score of his nearest competitor! (We’re excluding the second-ranked set, which also belongs to MLM.) Assembled since 1995, every coin is MS 68. The set commemorates the heroic effort at the Battle of the Alamo to win independence for Texas, and in the set summary, we can sense MLM’s excitement as he bellows, “Remember the Alamo!”
