Complete Set in Mint State Condition. Type 1 (1876-1880) shows Alfonso XII at age 18, without beard. Type 2 (1881-1885) shows Alfonso XII at age 23, with beard. Six dates are common (1876-1881), three are uncommon (1882-1884), and both versions of 1885 are rare. In the Slot Description below, the date in parentheses refers to the date stamped incusely into the stars located on either side of the official date. For instance, on the 1876 coin, the left star reads "18" and the right star reads "76." The official date and the star date are not always the same, as, for instance, in the 1885(86) coin. See the Owner Comments there for a fuller explanation. The three initials (e.g., DEM) are the initials of the two mint assayers and the mint's scale judge who PERSONALLY guaranteed the coin's purity and weight. The initials appear on the coin's reverse, assayers to the left, scale judge to the right. The mint mark is the 6-pointed star, meaning "minted in Madrid." Mints in other Spanish cities used 3-, 4-, 7-, or 8-pointed stars, but those mints had closed by 1870.* Mintage for overseas provinces (Puerto Rico; Philippines) used 5-pointed stars. Coin weight 8.064515 grams. Purity 900 fine. Coin diameter 24 millimeters, thickness 1.34 millimeters. Gold content 0.23335 ounce. In Spain the Alfonso XII 25 Pesetas gold coins are called "Alfonsinas" (also, sometimes, "Alfonsinos"). Although Spain also minted gold pesetas of 10, 20, and 100 Pesetas denomination, the 25 Pesetas Alfonsinas account for 82% of all gold peseta coins minted and 85% of all gold peseta face value. *3-pointed star = Segovia; 4 = Jubia; 7 = Sevilla; 8 = Barcelona. The NGC Registry began recognizing “Top Pop” coins with a special icon in only the last year or two, but we might have to consider an “Only Pop” label as coined by JohnA in his description of his 1885(86) 25 peseta. JohnA in his detailed comments notes that this rare coin is not only the highest-graded coin, but the only coin graded by NGC or PCGS. The coin was authorized in 1885 and dated 1885 but produced in 1885 and 1886. JohnA’s comments and clear photos reveal an incuse 18 and 86 struck in the stars on either side of 1885.
