NGC Expert Comments:
Av.Mustafa KuL has been an advocate for coins of the Ottoman Empire encompassing Turkey, Egypt, and other countries and his enthusiasm has led to the creation of many new Registry sets in these areas. Middle Eastern coins are unfamiliar to many, so we will help elaborate. In this set, the obverse of each coin features a “toughra” which is a monogram of the Sultan’s name with embellished letters. Each reverse is dated 1337 (١٣٢٧), the Hejira year that Muhammad V became Sultan, while the obverse has anywhere from a 1 to a 9 marking the individual year of the Sultan’s reign. Muhammad V ruled from 1909-1918. Virtually all of the coins in the set are in mint state, and Av.Mustafa KuL has many other complete and nearly complete Turkey sets.
