NGC Expert Comments:
San Marino has always been a small country, but even small countries need coins. San Marino’s handsome coinage 1864-1938 was produced in Italy at the Rome and Milan mints. One of the highlights is the 1898 silver 5 Lire engraved by the famed Italian Filippo Speranza. The coin depicts the early Christian Saint, Marinus, from whom San Marino takes its name. V.L.’s set is nearly complete except for a few common issues. Most of the coins are MS 64 and above and V.L.’s carefully selected coins are wonderful representations of these coins’ old-world charm.
