The Proof 1 Onza, or Libertad, coins of Mexico represent, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful coins in the modern world. My reason for collecting these coins is likely reflected in many collector's motivation, to gather beautiful coins with exceptional rarity. Personally, I feel that the 1 Onza coin, one ounce and the size of a silver dollar, is the most aesthetic of the series. I appreciate the heft and size and it brings me back to childhood when my father would give a an Eisenhower (Ike) dollar (or several) - typically when he was gambling. Luckily, I took up coin collecting and not the gambling. These are the only nationally minted silver bullion coins in the world without a denomination but which are legal tender in Mexico, at the spot price of silver. The challenge in obtaining these coins, especially in the highest grade, makes the creation of a complete set that much more difficult but also rewarding when one achieves the goal. New varieties continue to be added to the set, which creates new hurdles to maintain a top set. You will find in my comments that for many of the coins that I do have my favorites - or coins for which even a VERY strong offer to sell will be refused. These are primarily the earlier dates where the PF70 UCAM designation is exceptionally rare; in some cases my example may be the sole coin of this grade. Finding such coins does not come easy and required me to buy and sell MANY coins (1000's) to finally gain the grade with the right coin. I hope this set will provide impetus to new collectors of the series. I also hope that others may see this series as a natural extension of the American Eagle, but with phenomenally lower mintages and a very supportive demographics which will only fuel the valuation and appreciation of the series.
