Gold Pesetas - Complete Set (Originals and Restrikes)

This set is a collection of all Spanish gold peseta circulation issues, both originals and restrikes. The originals were minted from 1876 to 1904 during Spain's membership in the Latin Monetary Union. For more than half of the 31 examples in this complete set, each is the highest-graded coin of its respective NGC census, including each example with a rare date: 1885(86) 25 Pesetas, 1904(04) 20 Pesetas, 1879(79) 10 Pesetas, 1892(92) 20 Pesetas, and 1885(85) 25 Pesetas. Spain joined the Latin Monetary Union in 1868 and adopted the peseta as its national monetary unit, replacing the escudo. The Latin Monetary Union standardized the weight and purity of gold and silver coins minted in several European countries. For instance, 20 Pesetas = 20 Francs = 20 Lire = 20 Drachmai in weight and purity. Pesetas were easily convertible for international commerce. Early on, in 1873, the LMU silver standard was abandoned. Then cheating in gold weight and purity by some nations rendered international exchange selective by the 1900s, and rampant inflation due to competing paper currencies, especially during and after World War I, led to the LMU's complete demise. It formally disbanded in 1927. The peseta continued as Spain's national monetary unit until 2002, when the euro replaced it. Spain minted its first gold pesetas for circulation in 1876, with the 25-peseta coins. Ultimately, Spain minted gold peseta coins of 10, 20, 25, and 100 pesetas denomination. The last gold peseta originals were minted in 1904, with a very limited production of 20-peseta coins (3,814 pieces). Gold peseta restrikes, using original dies, were minted in 1961 and 1962 through a collaboration of Spain's national mint with a private company that paid for the project and marketed the restrikes to collectors. The four Slots below for gold peseta coins dated 1870 or 1871 and qualified by NGC "for display purposes only" are rarities of test mintage only (official mintage of 25, 12, 25, and 50 coins respectively). These issues are catalogued in Krause-Mishler among the gold pesetas, but they are rarely available to collectors and have not been assigned Price Guide Values by Krause-Mishler or competitive Coin Scores by NGC. As the owner of this extensive collection relates in its entertaining introduction, Spain joined the Latin Monetary Union in 1868 and adopted the peseta as a coinage that would be in line with those of other Union members. Gathered here are all of the gold issues from 1876 to the end of coinage in 1904, both originals and restrikes. The owner has provided good photos of each entry and detailed numismatic information. A few of the more memorable coins include the 1892 PGM 20P (NGC MS 66), the rare 1904 SMV 20P (MS 62) and another rarity, the 1885(86) MSM 25P (MS 63).
